Why it is a counter item
The FDA-listed product, Hospira’s Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP, is labelled “Rx only”, the federal legend for prescription drugs. A pharmacy treats any Rx-only product the same way: it is kept behind the counter and dispensed by the pharmacist, usually against a prescription. The label also carries the warning “NOT FOR USE IN NEONATES” because of its benzyl alcohol.
What a given pharmacist will dispense is their decision, so stock and requirements vary from store to store. The only reliable answer for one location is to call its pharmacy.
What a pharmacy charges
None of the three pharmacies publishes a shelf price, because the product is filled at the counter. Price-comparison sites show what a 30 mL vial costs without insurance or a discount card:
| Source | 30 mL vial, retail cash price |
|---|---|
| GoodRx average retail price | $23.76 |
| Rx.com retail price | $28.79 |
| Published price guides | Up to about $35 |

Retailer by retailer
CVS
CVS dispenses bacteriostatic water for injection at the pharmacy counter. Stores that do not hold it can usually order it in. “Bacteriostatic water CVS” is searched about 9,900 times a month in the US, more than any other retailer pairing.
Walgreens
Walgreens handles it the same way: a pharmacy item, with stock that varies between stores and smaller stores more likely to order it in than to hold it. Calling ahead saves a wasted trip.
Walmart
In store it is a Walmart Pharmacy counter item. Online, a walmart.com search for “bacteriostatic water” also returns humidifier tank treatments sold under the same name in large bottles, which are a different product entirely (see below).
Amazon
A search of amazon.com on 8 October 2026 returned no bacteriostatic water listings. Bacteriostatic water for injection is a prescription-labelled product and Amazon restricts prescription drugs, though Amazon has not published a statement specific to it. Listings that do appear under names such as “water vials” or “reconstitution bottles” are sold as empty containers and carry no label, lot number or stated contents.
Products that are not bacteriostatic water
- “Bacteriostatic water treatment” for humidifiers. A tank additive for evaporative humidifiers, sold in bottles of around 32 fl oz. It shares the word “bacteriostatic” and nothing else.
- Laboratory waters (nuclease-free, DEPC-treated, PCR grade). Sterile, but with no benzyl alcohol, so not bacteriostatic.
- Sterile Water for Injection. A genuine injectable diluent, but preservative-free and single-dose. See sterile water for injection vs bacteriostatic water.
Bacteriostatic water for injection comes in a small sealed vial labelled with its volume in mL, “0.9% benzyl alcohol” (or 1.1% on one Hospira glass vial), a lot number and an expiry date. Online suppliers are listed in where to buy bacteriostatic water for injection.
